THE HISTORY OF THE RISE, PROGRESS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE. ABOLITION OF THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE BY.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, ad Orme, 1808. Inscribed by important banker and abolitionist David Barclay (of Barclay's bank) to. An EXTREMELY beautiful first edition / first issue copy of Thomas Clarkson's "History of the Abolition of the Slave Trade, " the first and still the most important history of British abolitionism written by one of its prime movers. Along with Granville Sharpe's early writings and Equiano's Narrative, this is easily the most sought after book among collectors interested in slavery, the slave trade, and abolitionism.

The abolition of the slave trade, a three hundred year old enterprise that produced enormous wealth through the transportation of over ten million African men and women, is one of the most extraordinary accomplishments in modern human history. Here is its "official history, " written to commemorate Parliament's voting to abolish the trade in 1808. (For the best modern works on the trade, see Adam Hochschild's "Bury the Chains" and Christopher Brown's "Moral Capital, " both of which rely heavily on the work for sale here). In addition to being a tremendously important and always sought after book, this copy has an interesting history. It contains a charming inscription inside the title page of the first volume: David Barclay (aged 80, this 9th day of the 6th mo: 1808), to his Esteemed Friend Hannah Pim.

David Barclay was an extremely influential Quaker banker and philanthropist and used his extreme wealth and control of Barclay's bank to help fund the movement to abolish the slave trade. Hannah Pim was the wife of John Pim, Jr.

A Quaker merchant in London, and both Pims were active petitioning and organizing for abolition. 1 545 pgs; vol 2. The first issue of the book in London, precedes the American edition published in Philadelphia that same year.

Both volumes are VERY GOOD in contemporary half calf over gray marbled boards. The hinges of both volumes are a bit cracked, with spotting and chipping on the spine, as shown, though the gilt text and volume number on each spine quite visible. Some toning to the edges of text block.

Both volumes contain a worn private library plate inside cover and an inscription from Barclay to Pim as well as later ownership signature, James L. Otherwise pages clean and unmarked and show very little foxing. Binding very tight and all pages present. The book contains two of the three original plates: a fold out "family tree" of abolitionism and a depiction of slave shackles. Overall, a stunning and extremely presentable copy of one of the most important works of the early 19th century, inscribed by the important Quaker banker and abolitionist David Barclay from whom Barclay's Bank gets its name.
