A fascinating handwritten diary journal and sketchbook kept by Listed American Artist and author of The Science Of Model and Object Drawing , Lucas Lee Baker. This journal comes from a large collection of journals and papers belonging to the Harvard graduate and professor and was compiled while he was teaching in Brooklyn in the early 1880s and also in various spots in Massachusetts. When the journal is first opened one is presented with a fascinating display; an original CDV photo of the artist Lucas Baker as well as a printed calling card, letter from Brooklyn, small sketch and a pamphlet from the Metropolitan Museum Art School!Contain drawings of various plant life. This is followed by numerous random drawings, medical related entries, various thoughts or information and or diary entries while in Brooklyn or Templeton, MA. I would say there are no more than 10 individual diary entries but they are quite fascinating.
Includes dozens and dozens of remarkable sketches including a hotel on Staten Island, a view and description of the Jersey City skyline, the Whitney Tavern in Templeton MA, ladies fashion in NYC and much more. Many of the drawings are dated 1883 and also present us with a location. I did not that there are two ink inscriptions on the Whitney Tavern Drawings (not pictured due to lack of room) dated 2004 and done by a family member. The inscriptions are staring how the fire pit looks exactly the same in 2004 as it did when Baker drew it in 1883; just fascinating! The book contains 188 pp.And is primarily full with about 50 scattered blank pages throughout including 10 or so at the rear. The book contains lost of content and many interesting drawings. The ones of early Staten Island And Jersey City are quite remarkable and the sketches of the people are equally enjoyable! In Very Good condition with gentle exterior wear. Front hinge has a little play and has pulled away slightly from the binding. The binding remains strong and tight and all pages are secured firmly. The text block is in Good condition with gentle toning. Primarily done in pencil but all entries and drawings are bright and legible. Measures 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 x 1/2 thick.
