Mishima, Yukio,'The Temple of the Golden Pavilion' SIGNED first edition 1/1

Temple of the Golden Pavilion. UK first edition, first printing published by Secker & Warburg. Signed in Japanese with the inscription. From Yukio with Love [signature].

The book belonged to James Shuttleworth, Mishima's friend and possible lover. James Shuttleworth was the son of Martin Shuttleworth, influential literary critic of the Paris Review. The book will be accompanied with copies of the letters of provenance. The condition of the book is very good with moderate foxing to the first five pages and endpapers. The original dust jacket is very good, price clipped and with vibrant colouring.

The book stems from the Shuttleworth estate. Martin Shuttleworth from the Paris Review was an influential literary critic who recommended Mishima to the Nobel Prize committee. He hosted many literary figures in his house including Mishima who took a liking to his son Jason James. James visited Japan many times and it became an open secret that James and Mishima were romantically involved. This book stems from James collection.

Copies of letters provide excellent provenance for the signature. The Temple of the Golden Pavillion' was adapted as a film (three times), theatre play, opera, and modern dance work. Signed UK first editions are exceptionally scarce to find in any condition.
