Production with illustrations by Peter Bailey, presented in a beautiful slip case. From the first printing (first edition thus). Exclusive new preface by author Philip Pullman. The set is comprised of: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.Very slight shelf wear to slipcase. All three books are like new. His Dark Materials (HDM) is one of the best children/ young adult novels of our times. The power of imagination and prose matches the likes of Tolkien, CS Lewis and Ursula K. In my personal opinion the His Dark Materials trilogy is much more engaging than Lord of the Rings, and more intellectually stimulating than Narnia. Although Pullman has been compared to CS Lewis and Tolkien, the coming of age story is closer to Le Guins Earthsea Trilogy. The bottom line is that HDM will remain one of the the most loved stories for decades to come and it will be read in a century from now. Unfortunately the dilitant adaptation as The Golden Compass was Hollywood rubbish and did not do Pullman and the book justice. However, a BBC adaptation is on its way with Pullman on board and one can only hope that the Brits will do a better job (no schedule confirmed yet). The TV series format is certainly more suitable for a story of that magnitude, and if the BBC can match the quality of recent HBO productions we all will be blessed!
