His family was friends with Albert Einstein's family, and other notable friends were Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, Jakob Wasserman and Erich Fromm, all of whom had helped Philippe during his darkest hours. Though he studied electrical engineering, Philippe Halsman moved to France in 1932 and began his career in photography.
After just a few years, he became regarded as one of France's finest portrait photographers. Then, there was World War II, and, in 1940, after Hitler's Nazis invaded France, with Einstein's assistance, Philippe fled to the U.
