The Pantropheon: Or, History of Food and Its Preparation : from the Earliest Ages of the World. Simpkin, Marshall and Co : London. A first edition of Alexis Soyer's illustrated history of gastronomy. With a signed letter from the author to Thomas Babington Macaulay.

First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Rebound, Signed. This book weighs 1.5 KG when packed.

A rare first edition of this work, signed by the author and with an interesting association. Thomas Macaulay's copy of this famous work. Illustrated with forty-two steel engraved plates depicting'the greatest gastronomic marvels of antiquity'. Thus is French chef Alexis BenoƮt Soyer's history of food and its preparation,'from the earliest ages of the world'. During his lifetime, Soyer was the most celebrated cook in Victorian England and was in charge of the kitchens at the Reform Club.

With a signed letter from the author to Thomas Babington Macauley to the front endpaper. The letter, dated October 12th 1853, reads as follows:' Dear Sir, I shall esteem it a particular favour by allowing my Pantropheon to fill a corner in your private library - with many thanks, I have the honor to remain, your most obed. A British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist on contemporary and historical socio-political subjects, and as a reviewer. Rebacked, with original cloth binding restored. Plates retain their original tissue guards. Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear. Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones. Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy.

Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair. As with good only above but with other faults. Leaving a compromised copy even after repair. Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
