Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed. This book weighs 5 KG when packed. The first edition of this work. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by the author to half title to William Gilchrist' to each volume, dated 1923-9. History of the life of Thomas Carlyle from 1795 to 1865. With plates of illustrations in black and white. Thomas Carlyle was a British leading author of the Victorian era, contributing to the literature with essays, histories, philosophical treaties, &c. He exerted a profound influence on nineteenth century art, literature, and philosophy. In the original publisher's uniform full cloth bindings.

Externally very smart with light bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities, boards lightly soiled. Light spotting to fore edge affecting occasional leaf, pages otherwise generally bright and clean throughout. Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear. Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones.

Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy. Some more serious faults as will. Be described in the condition report under'condition. Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair. As with good only above but with other faults. Leaving a compromised copy even after repair. Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete. We only sell books in this condition where their rarity or value makes them.
