There is no bookplate, owner's name or other inscription, except for the author's signature. Along part of the rear gutter, negligible edge wear and corner bumping, with slight toning along the outer edge of both front and rear boards. The spine shows the same toning and is bumped at the bottom and slightly torn at the top, losing 2mm. There is no damage to the right side of the spine, only the superficial separation along about one third of the left side of the spine.
The front endpaper is intact, the rear one shows a tear and two chips in the flyleaf. Overall a very impressive book, well maintained by a concerned collector.
The novel centers on a slave trader who kills an African man and steals his drum, which is engraved with a distinct face of a demon... [His son's] wife's and daughters' lives end tragically, and with a demented expression on his face, he ends up walking away hand-in-hand with the jester. His wordless novels have influenced the development of the graphic novel. Strongly associated with his wood engravings, he also worked in watercolor, oil, brush and ink, lithography and mezzotint. In 1929, Ward was inspired to create a wordless novel of his own after he came across German artist Otto Nückel's Destiny (1926). He made five more such works: Madman's Drum (1930), Wild Pilgrimage (1932), Prelude to a Million Years (1933), Song Without Words (1936), and Vertigo (1937). Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
