Caldwell Delaney was one of Mobile and Alabama's pre-eminent historians, educators and authors. Deep South was his first book. Mobile is the heart of the Deep South. Particularly is this true of city dwellers in the South who have little actual contact with the plantation country.

As a result, a group of young Mobilians undertook during college vacations and holidays a series of expeditions into the plantation country of the Alabama-Tombigbee river system in search of the feel of the good black earth. The results of these rambles appear in this book. Many sketches of the plantations and mansions are set forth in this book. The ghosts of the Old South.
