A signed US first edition of Indian-born American writer Santha Rama Rau's account of her time spent in the Soviet Union with her husband and their small son, in the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper. Explaining that'curiosity' prompted their journey, they were'permitted much more than the normal length of a tourist stay', and detail their experiences in the USSR and observations of the everyday life of Soviet Russians. Signed to the front free endpaper,'For my darling Audrey with love from Santha'. The Audrey referred to is Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII.

A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie's library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards, and price unclipped pictorial dust wrapper.

Bumping to spine head and tail, with light spotting to back strip. Signed by author to front free endpaper. Dust wrapper marked, with discolouration to front and rear wrap, light sunning to spine, and edge wear and chipping to perimeters.

Closed tear to tail of rear wrap, with losses to head and tail of back strip. Overall Condition: Very Good Good. Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear.

Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones. Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy.

Some more serious faults as will. Be described in the condition report under'condition. Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair. As with good only above but with other faults. Leaving a compromised copy even after repair.
