1974 Janie Ellice's RECIPES 1846-1859 Cooking Signed Numbered Limited Edition
For full description see below - after all photographs. Elizabeth Craig foreword and SIGNED copy. In full calf binding and slipcase. A very nice copy from the Arcadia Press. Janie Ellice's Recipes is no ordinary recipe book but a delightful medley of household hints and instructions for many diverse things - from a cure for consumption to waterproofing clothes, from how to make cheese to knitting a shawl. All the receipts (recipes) were collected by Janie Ellice, wife of Edward Ellice, MP for St Andrews, who became one of Scotland's most popular and influential hostesses of the mid-nineteenth century. She wrote the recipes by hand in an exercise book and illustrated each page with witty pen and ink drawings: all here reproduced in facsimile with facing-page'translation' and comments from the editor, Josie A. Wentworth, who also contributes an introduction, bibliographical notes about Janie, and a glossary of the more unusual terms and measures.
Not only does the book bring to life the personality of a resourceful, talented and humorous Victorian'housewife', but also paints a picture of country life in Victorian Scotland which so few other works can so well convey.
