It is tightly bound in original vellum, with gold gilt detailing to the front board and spine. This beautiful book of Aesops Fables is in Near Fine condition. The cream boards have some spotting, predominantly to the top edge and to the spine and there is some very slight rubbing, otherwise they are lovely and bright and free from damage and blemished. Internally, there is some spotting to the inside of the boards and the free endpapers, but the rest of the pages are beautifully clean, bright and, apart from the odd age spot, free from marks or damage.
All 13 colour plates are present and in stunning condition, bright and intricate in their detail. It is also adorned with numerous black and white illustrations, depicting scenes from the fables.
Originally penned between 620 and 560 BC by Aesop, the morals of the fables are still very relevant today and are enjoyed by readers of all ages. Arthur Rackhams illustrated version of Aesops Fables was originally released in 1912 in time for the christmas season and rivalled the commercial sales he enjoyed with Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. This beautiful copy is an excellent example of Arthur Rackhams masterfully illustrated version of this famous and timeless book and would be the ideal complement to any rare book collection.
