Charles Lindbergh was an aviation pioneer who piloted the first nonstop solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. Alexis Carrel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912 for pioneering vascular suturing techniques. He invented the first perfusion pump, which kept living organs alive outside of the body during surgery, with Charles Lindbergh, opening the way to organ transplantation and the artificial heart. Carrel was also a pioneer in tissue culture, transplantology and thoracic surgery. Together they co-authored a book, The Culture of Organs, first published in 1938.
