ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND LEWIS CARROLL 1868 SIGNED FIRST EDITION

For sale is a unique and very important SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY of the 1868 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Published London: MacMillan and Co.

A full suite of forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. This being the 11th Thousand of the First Edition. This is an exceptional signed presentation copy, by the author. To the halftitle, is his inscription; Mary Harriet Rowden, from the Author. " And following this, in Rowden's hand, is her address at the time of receipt "15.

Edward Rowden, his wife, six children, and staff, lived at 15 St. Oxford, until 1881, at which point the property was rented out (by Mary's mother) to a Baronet. Not only was Edward a Reverend, he also held the post of Registrar of the University ; he was a close friend of Lewis Carroll (of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson - to give him his academic name). Bound in the publisher's original red cloth with gilt decoration to the spine and boards.

The title and publisher's name to the spine, and triple-line panels to each board. To the upper board is a central cartouche showing'Alice', and to the lower board is a central cartouche showing the'Cheshire Cat'. The original boards have been preserved and the spine has undergone replacement. The boards are predictably rubbed in places, and a letter appears to have been written on paper, with the book used as a'rest', and therefore there are ink splashes in places.

Could this have been Carroll, using the volume in this way, before inscribing it to Mary? It is indeed quite possible. The textblock is pleasingly crisp and fresh, and has only a few marks to the margins. Overall, this is unique opportunity to own a signed and very early edition of this cornerstone in C19th children's fiction.

It will grace any collection, and it is an opportunity not to be missed. Further images are also available upon request. Please do peruse our other listings we have a whole host of rare and first edition books and related items.
