He Archetype Press, Berkeley 1938, 1938. 13 x 17 inches, 202 pages, cloth, some very light soiling and discoloration to cloth (cover has been protected by acetate cover) , little or no fading to spine with very minor shelf wear, and 2 small bumps to bottom of front cover. Very minor discoloration to all the page edges, common with a publication of this age. This was the first major monograph of Adams' work. The book includes tipped-in illustrations from photographs by Ansel Adams printed in the finest half-tone process of the time.

Sierra Club member Walter Starr commissioned Adams to produce the book as a memorial to his son who was killed while climbing in the High Sierra. This elaborate publication was used as a sophisticated lobbying tool while Congress was voting on the establishment of Kings Canyon National Park.

First Edition, Limited edition: 500 numbered and Signed copies by Adams. This copy is #164 of an edition of 500 Copies. NEAR FINE CONDITION, very little if any foxing to front and rear paste-downs and end-papers. Three of the Plates have what would be called minor imperfections. Plate XV: BEAR CREEK SPIRE FROM MOUNT STARR has a 1.1mm X 0.1mm piece of ink missing from lower right-hand corner (see photos 7 and 8). Plate XVI: LEAVES has perhaps 5 or 6 "cracks' in the "emulsion in the lower right hand area of the plate only visible when viewing it in strong side light (see photos 9 and 10), and.

Plate XXX: MARION LAKE has what can best be described as a 2mm bump in the lower center of the image, again only visible when viewing it in strong side light (see photos 11 and 12). I have owned this book since 2004, and have only taken it from the Glass Book Case it has been stored in 3 or 4 times. Please see AbeBooks for copies of this book that are nowhere near the Near Fine Condition of this one. Any defects not mentioned but visible in the pictures will be considered as described.
