CHARLES DICKENS SIGNED FIRST EDITION DAVID COPPERFIELD 1850 RARE ENVELOPE
For sale is a very scarce early issue of the first edition of David Copperfield , by Charles Dickens. Published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1850. Complete, and with a full suite of beautiful plates by H. All of but one of Smith's textual issue points here present this being the'screamed' error, to p. Bound from the original serialised monthly parts, this volume boasts a fine contemporary calf binding, over marbled boards. Ornate stamping to the spine, and a fine gilt and black calf title label. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Together with this rare and important title, we have here, tipped-in to the FFEP, an envelope, addressed by the hand of Charles Dickens. Written in his favoured royal blue ink, it reads: Samuel Brown Esquire, Administrative Reform Association, 86 King William Street, London. We know from The Letters of Charles Dickens , that he wrote to Samuel Brown, on 7 July 1855, regarding obtaining copies of his Speech of Charles Dickens... Delivered At The Meeting of The Administrative Reform Association, At The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Wednesday, June 27, 1855. London: Effingham Wilson, 1855, on administrative reform. The date on this envelope would rather imply that it was concerning this speech, as to why Dickens wrote to Brown on this occasion. Externally it remains in very pleasing order; the calf is bright and with rubbing only commensurate with age.

The marbled paper is trivially rubbed in places. Internally the text block is one of the cleanest we have encountered. The plates again are largely fresh; the frontispiece and vignette title with the predictable browning, and some with occasional spotting, but certainly on the whole a great deal cleaner than often found in this title. The condition of the envelope is excellent, and the colouration of both the ink and the stamps is superb. Indeed, we have here a unique pairing, and one which would grace any library.

It comes highly recommended to both the Dickens enthusiast and general collector alike. A certificate of authenticity will be provided with the item. Further images are also available upon request.
