Helen Rootham Fundamentals of Music rare signed 1925 1st
Fundamentals of Music and the Relation to Modern Life. Burns Oates & Washbourne Ltd. Inscribed to the title page: "To Inez With love from Helen July 1925". The recipient was Inez Chandos-Pole (formerly Inez Blanche Marie Clothilde Eva Arent), a friend of Edith Sitwell, though whether Inez knew Helen through Edith or Edith through Helen is unclear. This book comes from Radbourne Hall, home of the Chandos-Pole family. A small pamphlet firmly bound in the publisher's buff coloured wraps, lettered in black, the spine is slightly faded, the covers lightly marked and the extremities a little rubbed and creased. The text block is slightly foxed and toned. Helen Rootham was a poet, translator and musician, who contributed to the first of the famous Wheels anthologies, though she is probably best known today as Edith Sitwell's governess and remained her close friend and companion until her death in 1938. A very nice association copy of an uncommon pamphlet, which was inspired apparently by the philosophical musings of St Augustine.
