For sale is a unique and very important SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY of the 1878 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Published London: MacMillan and Co.
A full suite of forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. This being the Fifty-Eighth Thousand of the First Edition.
Plus the publisher's advertisement leaf. This is an exceptional authors presentation copy, with the following inscription; Mrs A. Mrs Severn was the cousin of John Ruskin, and also his companion during the latter years of his life. The correspondence between Carroll and Mrs Severn is mentioned in The Collected Letters of Lewis Caroll.
Bound in the publisher's original red cloth with gilt decoration to the spine and boards. The title and publisher's name to the spine, and triple-line panels to each board. To the upper board is a central cartouche showing'Alice', and to the lower board is a central cartouche showing the'Cheshire Cat'. Externally the binding is in fair order: marking to covers but the gilt fresh and bold. Areas of professional repair to the hinges and spine tips.
The textblock is pleasing, largely crisp, and has only a few sporadic marks in places. Overall, this is unique opportunity to own a signed and very early edition of this cornerstone in C19th children's fiction.
