Looking for Love - SIGNED. Photographs from Chelsea Reach Nightclub New Brighton Merseyside. Comments by Mark Lally, Kirtsteen & Paul Chase. Publisher is Cornerhouse Publications, Manchester, UK, 1989. Looking for Love is a candid portrayal of the 1980s-teenage bar scene, which hasnt changed much since todays scene.

Young adults flirting, kissing, groping and dancing makes for a nice evening, where drinking seems to be approved, regardless of age. Teenagers trying to be in style with their finest sexiest costumes for a night of frivolous and flirtatious behavior is encouraged and mostly expected. Pushing and shoving amongst the male teenage crowd is the norm, and everyone is keyed into it, and enjoying themselves with hefty abandon. Tom Woods photographs of the clientele of the Chelsea Reach Nightclub in New Brighton, Merseyside were taken between 1984-87 and first published as Looking for Love in 1989. Wood was a regular at the club and shot thousands of pictures over several years, however, due to budget constraints at the time of book printing only a fraction of these were reproduced as full plates in the original Cornerhouse publication.

From the foreword by David Chandler: Tom Wood's Looking for Love begins where documentary ends. These pictures, taken at the Chelsea Ranch, New Brighton , belong to a prolonged period of visual negotiation between Wood, the immediate community and the wider environs of Merseyside. They are one aspect of a complex and layered portrait.

Although most were taken between 1984 and 1987, Wood began photographing in the area in 1978 and by the time he started working at the club either knew or recognized by sight, many of its clientele... In viewing these photographs, we seem to collude with the photographer.

As we count the spots or trace the melting eyeliner we are implicated in an act of intrusion. Some viewers may be repelled by this closeness or dismiss it as mere voyeurism, yet Wood is interested in more than just short-term gains... His concern is to infiltrate that mythology of the night out, to find within the buzz and the boredom, within the public displays of lust, loneliness, and frustration, the minute codes of physical and emotional contact to which, in this space, all hope and desire are wired.
