Signed by author Margaret Mitchell on the front free endpaper as was her habit since the endpaper is a bit thicker than the rest ot the book's pages and Margaret used live ink. The book comes with the original, unrestored first state dust jacket with all issue points: USD 3 on the bottom of the front flap, and with the "Gone with the Wind" title printed on the second column of the back panel.

The book also comes with correspondence letters of several Mitchell family members including a typed and signed letter by Maragret Mitchell (see below for details), and an old photograph of Margaret Mitchell's aunt, Annie Fitzgerald Stephens (1870 - 1910). Condition of the book : a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. The book is perhaps unread considering that the spine is in remarkable shape displaying the same colour as the boards and without any, bumps, rubbing or tears. The lettering is fresh and vibrant. Mild ageing spots to top of the boards as shown. Inside there are no previous owner's scribbles, no bookplates and no stamps. All pages are clean without any foxing.

Page block has NO foxing with usual toning commensurate with age. The dust jacket is a first state original specimen without any restorations. It is NOT price clipped, vibrant in colour without any fading on the spine. Slight edge wear and chipping to the top of the spine as shown.

The letters : The book is accompanied by several letters written by the Mitchell family members. 1 A typed and signed letter by Margaret Mitchell (1900- 1949) on her personal stationary with Margaret Mitchell printed to top left corner, measuring 27 x 18cm. Dated 5 January 1942; located Atlanta, Georgia.

Addressed to Mrs Walker [born Mary Stanley Newman] with the accompanying envelope where Margaret Mitchell wrote her name in hand'Mrs John R Marsh'. In near fine condition with usual two folds to fit the envelope.

Walker: Yesterday Father gave me the picture of my Aunt Annie Stephens and of Mother sitting with two people unknown to me. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the picture of Mother. She did not photograph well and had few pictures made. This one is utterly charming and her expression and costume delight me. Father wants me to try and have it enlarged a little so that Stephens can have a copy too.

It was good and thoughtful of you to take this trouble and Father and Stephens and I thank you. Father would write you himslef if he could, but, as Judge Alex has doubtless told you, Father has been ill for some time.

He has been in St. Joseph's Infirmary for months with an acute kidney condition which necessitates very painful drainage every six weeks or so. He had such a drainage this morning and is feeling very poorly today. The last thing he told me before he went to the operaing room this morning was to be sure to write you and thank you.

Measuring 20.5 x 13.5cm with the accompanying envelope. Dear Mary: I received your very kind letter of October 15th and had previously received your former letter sent me in case of Judge Alex W. I highly appreciate your thoughtful kindness in sending me the group picture of Maybelle born. 1872- 1919, Margaret Mitchell's mother and others and the picture of annie Annie Fitzgerald Stephens (1870 - 1910, Margaret Mitchell's aunt). I never had a good photo of Maybelle.

The little group photo is so much the better likeness than many others we have that I handed it over to my daughter Margaret Mrs John R. Marsh and she will have it (or Maybelle's part of it) enlarged. I have been much worse since Judge Stephens gave me your letter and unable to write and still at St. Joseph's Hospital and without satisfactory writing materials.

But Margaret is so much like her that it lightens the loss. Margaret has no children but Stephen has two beutiful and intelligent boys. I would write further but writing is painful.

Mitchell, 1401 Peachtree Street N. 3 A typed and signed letter by Stephens Mitchell [Margaret Mitchell's brother]. Written on the Margaret Mitchell Marsh Estate stationary, addressed to Mrs. Mercer Sherman, dated 5 January 1966, together with the corresponding envelope. The letter answers a query in regarding the whereabouts of the above mentioned photograph of Margaret Mitchell's mother.

4 A second typed and signed letter by Stephens Mitchell regarding the whereabouts of the photograph, with the corresponding envelope, dated 18 February 1966, together with the mailing envelope. Informing Mrs Sherman that the photograph could not be located. 5 A cc of a letter written by Ernestine W.

Sherman, dated 25 February 1966, informing Stephens Mitchell that she still has one photograph of his aunt Annie in case he would like a copy. 6 A handwritten note, on one yellow sheet of paper explaining the relationship between Margaret Mitchell's mother Maybelle Stephens and Mary Stanley Newman (Mrs Ernest Walker) who were friends and grew up together as they lived across the street. 7 An old photograp of Margaret Mitchell's aunt, Annie Fitzgerald Stephens (1870 - 1910), taken around the year 1900. A fantastic set of ephemera which reveals the affection Margaret's father felt for his wife who died of the Spanish Flu in 1919. In 1919, Margaret traveled home to visit her ailing mother but arrived too late. Her illness and tragic death is said to have inspired part of the. Margaret Mitchell's bestselling'Gone with the Wind' is a landmark novel which won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize, and the 1936 National Book Awrd. The story was famously adappted 1939 starring Clarke Gable and Vivien Leigh, in turn one of the best known and successful films of all time. Much like Harper Lee's'To Kill a Mockingbird','Gone with the Wind' remained Mitchell's only novel published during her lifetime. Margaret Mitchell died in 1949 after being hit by a drunk driver.
