Bound in the publisher's hardcover boards, worn to the edges and corners, with shield to the upper board, lining in black, titled in gilt to the spine and upper board. Appears to have been recased at some point. Loosely inserted is a handwritten letter from the author to his publisher, dated July 1878, requesting that the book be insured whilst it was in the publisher's hands. Block generally in good order, with some light toning to the pages, top edge gilt, fore-edge slightly untrimmed. The history of the Walpole family during the Tudor period, focusing on key incidents in the lives of prominent family members and with comprehensive notes to each chapter.Rare with the signed letter from the author. Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy.
The old saying in bookselling is good ain't good. Fair : Another term for Poor or Reading Copy: Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive.
