People of today may need to be informed about the famous Philippe Halsman, who was born in Latvia in 1906 to Jewish parents. His family was friends with Albert Einstein's family, and other notable friends were Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, Jakob Wasserman and Erich Fromm, all of whom had helped Philippe during his darkest hours. Though he studied electrical engineering, Philippe Halsman moved to France in 1932 and began his career in photography.

After just a few years, he became regarded as one of France's finest portrait photographers. Then, there was World War II, and, in 1940, after Hitler's Nazis invaded France, with Einstein's assistance, Philippe fled to the U. Halsman met Salvador DalĂ­ in 1941; they began to collaborate on works together some years later. In 1945, Halsman was elected the first president of the American Society of Magazine Photographers..

His vivacious, brilliant, iconic photos appeared inside and on covers of many important popular magazines Paris Match, Look, Esquire, the Saturday Evening Post, and of course, Life Magazine. Anyone who remembers the beautiful Life Magazine probably pictures one of Philippe Halsman's photos - they graced the cover of Life Magazine a total of 101 times! One of Halsman's most famous photos was of Albert Einstein, taken in 1947, during a discussion of Einstein's regrets about his scientific work being used to create the atomic bomb. The resulting image remains as somberly fresh, dynamic and impactful today as it was 72 years ago. It was used on a U. Naturally, it was a vibrant Philippe Halsman photograph of John F. Kennedy that appeared on the first editions of JFK's book, Profiles in Courage. In 1958, a poll conducted by Popular Photography named Halsman one of the "World's Ten Greatest Photographers" And, in 1975 he received the Life Achievement in Photography Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers.

In 1951 Halsman was commissioned by NBC to photograph Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx, Bob Hope and other comedians of the day. He creatively photographed several of the comedians jumping up in mid-air, and, so later he took jump photos of many other important celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe. The famous photographer commented, When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears.

" Philippe Halsman referred to this psychologically philosophical photographic technique as "Jumpology, and he published Philippe Halsman's Jump Book in 1959, which contains a discussion of jumpology and 178 photographs of celebrity jumpers!
