This is the hardback First edition printed in very low numbers carrying the full number line of 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. It is the correct UK Bloomsbury publication not a re-issue/ted smart version etc. The book has been Signed in black ink to the dedication page by J K Rowling and this is an unmistakeable example from the period. It was Signed in 1998 the year of publication at a meet and greet session in Waterstones, Manchester part of one of Rowling's promotional book tours. Being only the second book published this was a time when the Harry Potter phenomenon hadn't quite taken hold so J K held quite a few signing events at various books shops, platforms and schools etc.
To have a signature correct for the period of publication is very refreshing and in the correct First Edition book it is really quite something. Asides the near impossible to find Philosopher's Stone HB of which there were around 200 printed this is up there with the Holy Grail for most collectors and is a title likely to be lacking from most collections. The book is bound in the publishers original pictorial cloth covers with matching dust jacket. This is a very bright example of the True First Edition as mentioned carrying the all important full number line of 10987654321 and the correct bloomsbury publishers logo to the spine etc. The covers present well remaining bright and clean.
There is a slight lean which is common else super. Internally the book is in good order throughout with no inscriptions or ownership markings to be seen. The pages are slightly discoloured with age which is again very common with the first three potter books.
Page 69 has a small corner torn and page 101 a small tear else super. The book as mentioned has been clearly Signed by J K in the usual free flowing style of the time. Her signature has evolved somewhat today but these early examples are unmistakeable and more desirable for the collector.
The dust jacket is included with the book being the correct First State. The jacket was changed after the 10th printing with the paragraphs on the flaps altered etc so any of the first few printigns have the same jacket. This one is good only with obvious chips and bumps to the spine tips and outer extremities. It has protected the book well but given it is now 20 years old and belonged to a child it unsuprisingly has some wear.It is worth picking up another jacket to improve and finish off this very Rare item. Overall this is just one of those books. There won't be to many that surface and there will be alot of collections that lack such a special First Edition.
