Deeply insightful and beautifully written, American journalist Richard Tregaskis's Invasion Diary covers "the story of the invasion of Sicily and southern Italy up to the temporary stalemate at Cassino" (New York Times). Embedded with the American forces, Tregaskis was able to get to know the men and their perspectives and to write about them with the insight of someone who had already experienced Guadalcanal. This is unquestionably one of the most readable books written during the war.
