SIGNED John Francis Waller Festival Tales 1st 1873 Supernatural Irish

A nice example of the first printing of the first edition. The book contains eight stories including two set in Ireland - "Snap Apple Night at Castle Slingby" and "Snowed Up- Balancing the Books". Original red cloth with gilt titles to spine. 7.5 x 5 inches. The book is in attractive condition, with some wear and bumping, spine little frayed and dulled (see pictures). Original brown end papers with a Dublin bookbinder label. Nicely signed gift inscription to the half title; "To My Dear Eleanor, from her affectionate Father - John Francis Waller - Christmas 1872". Additionally there is a later inscription opposite the half title "Irene M G Smithers - 1919". He was a regular contributor to Dublin University Magazine often under the pseudonyms "Iota" and "Jonathan Freke Slingsby".
