First edition in black cloth covered boards, red titled spine and red decorated cover, jacket art by Edd Cartier. AIthough I had several books signed by Mr. Heinlein through the years at conventions, I "truly" met Robert Heinlein and his wife Virginia when I was a student at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in the 1980s. They lived close by and would often drive to the school, as it had a great research library, and also both of them were former Navy officers...
They'd also bring Heinlein foreign language edition books to the Defense Language Institute (also in Monterey) and donate them to the institute. I would sometimes help Mrs. Heinlein lug those boxes around, as he was quite frail...
I got a letter from him or her somewhere about that... He died the second year that I was at NPS. Overall, I spent four decades collecting modern first editions while living in four different countries as part of my career in the US Navy and between 1975 and the 1980s I attended a LOT of conventions and would schlep a lot of books and nice fountain pens around to get them signed... When I say a LOT, I mean a LOT! I would always give the fountain pen away as a present. They often used the fountain pen itself to sign the books too and I often also got a nice signed letter thanking me for the pen! I also had some books never return - such as first edition of Carrie by Stephen King! This is an early Heinlein vintage book and the book is in great shape - I've added several photos so that you can see everything. I understand fully that book collectors can be picky about books, and signatures, and condition - I was one of them for over 40 years! The item "Sixth Column by Robert A.
