The Handmaid's Tale is a 1985 dystopian novel set in the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic military dictatorship formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America.

The novel is narrated by Offred, a handmaid, who must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, she and the other handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. But all of that is gone now.. The Handmaid's Tale was nominated for the 1986 Booker Prize, and won the first Arthur C. The book has recently been adapted into an acclaimed ongoing TV series (2017) starring Elisabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes.
